Famed Illinois Athletic Director George Huff for whom "Huff Hall" is named, as well as the "George Huff award, given annually by the Illini to scholar-athletes. Huff served as Illinois athletic director from 1901 to 1935, during a time in which Fighting Illini athletic programs enjoyed unparalleled success. Huff served as the driving force behind the construction of Memorial Stadium. He also served as football coach from 1895 to 1899, and baseball skipper from 1896 to 1919. Known by many of his close friends and business associates as "G," Huff served as manager of the Boston Red Sox in 1907, succeeding a guy named Cy Young! Rare TLS on his personal stationery dated the year of his death, 1936!
