Hank Gathers autographed photo. Full color magazine page boldly signed by this likely future hall of famer with his nickname, “Bank Man $$”! In the 1988-89 season, Gathers’ became the second player in history to lead NCAA Division I in scoring and rebounding in the same season, averaging 32.7 points and 13.7 rebounds per game. But despite his future promise to become one of basketball’s greatest players ever, he would never realize his full potential. On Sunday, March 4, 1990, he collapsed with 13:34 left in the first half of a West Coast Conference tournament semifinal game against Portland, just after scoring on an alley-oop dunk that put the Lions up 25-13. He never got up. He was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital at the age of only 23. An autopsy found that he suffered from a heart-muscle disorder, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In 1992, his life story was immortalized in a movie, Final Shot: The Hank Gathers Story. Gathers will almost certainly make the hall of fame one day (as did Maurice Stokes who similarly had his career tragically cut short at its beginning), and Gathers’ signature on anything is extremely rare. This is the only signed image of him that we have ever seen and it’s spectacular!
