Mary Bacon was a controversial jockey who was kidnapped, knifed, shot at, and in racing accidents where she suffered a broken back twice, broken hands and feet, a crushed pelvis, and a punctured lung. Through it all, the 5'4" Mary triumphed like some kind of charmed soap opera heroine. And her beauty, controversial statements, and regularly applied acerbic wit often served to distract from what might otherwise have been her sole legacy as the greatest woman rider ever. She was an anomaly in a man's world and her short life came to a tragic end in 1991 when she committed suicide in a motel room while suffering from terminal cancer.
